In Alaska, the Measure 2 campaign seeks to regulate marijuana in the same way that Alcohol is. Therefore it is an act to tax and regulate the production, sale and use of cannabis. The full initiative text is available to download from the campaign website.

Measure 2 is now in effect and has been since late 2014. Alaskan voters were 53 percent in favor or ending cannabis prohibition when they voted on November 4. The campaign called for a more realistic and sensible approach to what it considered to be a failed attempt at prohibition. What was successful for this particular campaign, was using alcohol and alcohol prohibition as a comparison to show how ineffective and unnecessary marijuana prohibition was.

The call to regulate cannabis in the same way as alcohol has arguably placed the consumption decision back in the hands of Alaskans, and this appealed to people’s ideas of freedom and liberty, as well as taking personal responsibility.

There have also obviously been the gains in the economy now that cannabis can be taxed accordingly. Marijuana sales in Alaska are now a legitimate, taxpaying business, and where there is revenue there is tax opportunity. The market is being regulated by the Alaska Alcoholic Beverage Control Board.

Recreational cannabis is legal in Alaska for any person over the age of twenty one. An individual can grow as many as six plants and is allowed to carry on their person up to one ounce of weed.
